Demystifying Common Foot Problems
Your feet have 26 bones each, which make them one of the most delicate areas in your body. Foot problems could arise from inflammation to injuries and many other types of malfunctions. If you are experiencing any pain or strain on your feet, then it is high time you see a podiatrist. Some of the common foot problems you might be suffering from are as follows:
Gout
Gout mainly affects the big toe. This condition occurs due to high levels of uric acid in the body. It is characterised by a burning sensation around the affected area. Gout can grow worse due to your eating habits and lifestyle. Gout mainly affects postmenopausal women and men who are over 40 years.
Athlete's foot
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection between the toes. The infection is characterised by itching and discomfort. One of the places where you would be exposed to the fungus is at the gym, at the pool or in the shower. This fungus thrives in damp and warm areas. The doctor will prescribe anti-fungal treatments.
Achilles Tendonitis
Tendons are like cords that connect your muscles to bone. When you over-stretch your tendons, you may suffer from tendonitis. Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation or irritation of the Achilles tendon. Achilles tendonitis causes a burning pain or aching when you engage in rigorous activity. Mild swelling and stiffness over the tendon are also a common symptom. Your doctor will perform a magnetic imaging resonance test if they suspect a tearing of the tendon tissues. The main treatment for this condition is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and physical therapy.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage within a joint breaks down from wear and tear. The damage is manifested as worn cartilage, decreased joint space and bone spurs around the joint. The lack of mobility and pain from osteoarthritis is experienced at the big toe joint, subtalar joint and ankle joint. Your risk of osteoarthritis is increased by aging, being obese and having a genetic predisposition to the condition. Your doctor will advise you to change your lifestyle and take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for the pain, or they'll give you an assisting device to help in mobility. For severe cases, your doctor will perform a surgery known as arthroscopy.
Foot pain can be quite inconveniencing, especially if it restricts your movement. While foot pain can be caused by many things from a fungal infection to a hereditary condition, you need to visit a podiatrist to determine the best cause of action. The most common types of foot conditions are gout, athletes' foot, Achilles tendonitis and osteoarthritis.
